Raphael is one of the three most important artists of the High Renaissance in Italy, along with Da Vinci and Michelangelo. This was an age of Enlightenment and Raphael’s works embodied the knowledge and advanced techniques of the day. He was a true Renaissance Man. He combined classical and scientific elements with his own calm, unique style. He understood the importance of the classical past, the new beliefs, knowledge and values of the present, and set the stage for different, art styles coming in the future Baroque period. He was modern in every way, using light, color and realism, yet he mixed the techniques with the themes of Christianity and had full support of the Pope. In his book, The Courtier, Baldassare Castiglione (see portrait in Major Accomplishments) says “The way to enlightenment [is] by the love of beauty.” Raphael created beauty and therefore understanding in the world of the Renaissance.
